A Bosch e43 error is a motor triac problem: the switching device on the control board that feeds the drive motor has failed, so the board can no longer regulate the drum. The drum stops mid-cycle, or never starts, and the machine holds the code. The fault is on the board, not in the motor windings and not in anything you can reach through the door.
That is worth stating plainly, because the symptom invites the wrong conclusion. A drum that will not turn feels mechanical, and people go looking for a seized bearing or a jammed pump. The code says otherwise: the board detected that the current it commanded and the current that flowed did not match, and it stopped.
What is a triac, and why does the washer care?
A triac is a solid-state switch that passes alternating current in both directions once it is told to conduct. In a washer with a brushed universal motor, a pair of them is how the board varies motor speed: instead of switching power fully on and off, the board fires the triac part-way through each half cycle, so the motor sees a controlled fraction of the available power. That is what lets one motor tumble gently on a delicate wash and then spin at high speed a few minutes later.
Triacs fail in two directions and both produce the code. A triac that has failed open passes nothing, so the motor never moves. A triac that has failed short passes everything, so the motor runs at full speed the instant power is applied and the board sees a speed it never asked for. The second is more alarming to watch and just as much a board repair. The code page for it is Bosch washer error code E43.
Is this the same as an inverter fault?
No, and the distinction decides which part is quoted. Bosch has used two motor architectures across its washers. Older and mid-range machines use a brushed universal motor with carbon brushes, driven by triacs on the main board — that is where the E43 code lives. Machines built around the brushless direct-drive motor use an inverter instead, an electronics package that synthesizes its own three-phase supply, and when that fails the machine raises E57 rather than this one.
So a Bosch e43 error tells you something about the machine as well as the fault: you are almost certainly looking at a brushed motor with replaceable carbon brushes and a tachometer coil on the shaft. What else produces a drum that will not turn?
Before accepting a board, rule out the cheap neighbors. Carbon brushes wear out — they are consumable by design, and a pair worn to the wire will stall the motor under load while behaving on a slow tumble. The tachometer coil that tells the board how fast the drum is actually turning can fail or lose its connector, and a board that gets no speed feedback behaves as though the drive circuit is at fault. A drum genuinely jammed by a wire from an underwire bra between the tub and the drum will stall the motor and draw a current the board rejects.
- Turn the drum by hand. With the power off, it should spin freely for a turn or two and coast. Grinding or a hard stop is mechanical and is not this code.
- Listen at the start of a cycle. A hum with no movement points at the motor circuit. Silence with the display lit points there too.
- Check the machine has not been overloaded repeatedly. A drive circuit that has spent years starting a drum packed past its rated load fails earlier than one that has not, and the cycle settings guide covers what the programs expect.
- Note whether the code follows a spin. A fault that appears only as the machine tries to accelerate to spin speed is the drive circuit under its heaviest demand.
Can I replace the board myself?
The board is reachable on most Bosch front loaders from the top, once the lid comes off, and a swap looks simple. Two things argue against doing it blind. The first is diagnosis: fitting a board to a machine whose real fault is a shorted motor winding will destroy the new board on the first cycle, which is an expensive way to learn what a meter would have told you. The second is what surrounds the work. The board carries mains voltage on its supply side, the door interlock sits on the same harness, and the pump and its filter are part of the water circuit — none of that should be opened with the machine plugged in or with water still in the tub.
Drain the machine first through the pump filter at the bottom front, which is worth doing anyway and is covered in our drain pump filter guide. Then unplug at the wall, not at the switch.
Where does E43 sit among the other washer codes?
It is one of the few Bosch washer codes that names a component on the board rather than a condition in the machine, which makes it unusually specific and unusually final. Most codes on our full washer code reference describe something the machine observed — water that did not arrive, a door that did not lock, a drum that did not empty — and leave the cause open. This one has already made the diagnosis.
It is also not a panel fault, which is the mix-up we see most. If your buttons are unresponsive or the display behaves erratically while the drum is fine, you want the control panel guide instead. A Bosch e43 error leaves the panel working perfectly and the drum dead, which is the opposite picture.
When should this become a service call?
As soon as the mechanical checks come back clean. A stalled drum with a free-turning tub and a lit panel is a drive-circuit diagnosis, and the measurement that separates a worn brush from a failed triac from a shorted winding takes a meter and the machine’s own service data. On a washer under about eight years old the repair is usually worth doing; past that, weigh it against repair or replace before ordering anything.
