What Bosch ER25 error means on your washer
The Bosch ER25 error indicates that the door lock coil has overheated due to repeated attempts to lock or unlock the door. The bi-metal actuator inside the lock assembly heats up each time the lock cycles. If the door fails to lock properly, the board retries multiple times, causing the coil to overheat and triggering ER25 as a thermal protection measure.
Symptoms
- The washer displays ER:25 and will not start
- The door may click repeatedly before the error appears
- The door lock area may feel warm to the touch
- After cooling down, the washer may work once then fail again
Common causes
- Obstruction in the lock mechanism — a foreign object (coin, button, fabric) preventing the lock pin from engaging
- Worn door lock assembly — the lock mechanism is worn and can’t engage reliably, causing repeated retry attempts
- Misaligned door catch — the striker doesn’t line up with the lock, causing the lock to cycle without engaging
- Damaged lock wiring — intermittent wiring causes the board to think the lock failed, triggering retries
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Let it cool — wait 30 minutes for the lock coil to cool down before attempting again.
- Check for obstructions — inspect the door catch area for any debris, fabric, or objects preventing the lock from engaging.
- Inspect the door catch — ensure the metal striker on the door frame is aligned and not bent or corroded. See Bosch washer support for door maintenance.
When to call a technician
If ER25 recurs after clearing obstructions and letting the lock cool, the door lock assembly needs replacement. Repeated overheating degrades the coil and the assembly won’t improve — it will fail more frequently. Schedule Bosch washer service. Our washer repair technicians replace door locks on all Bosch front-load models. See all Bosch washer error codes.
