What Bosch ER01 error means on your washer
The Bosch ER01 error is associated with a problem in the door lock assembly or its wiring. The control board attempted to engage the electronic door lock but did not receive confirmation that the lock is secure. Bosch front-load washers require a confirmed door lock before any cycle can begin — this is a critical safety interlock that prevents the door from opening during spin cycles.
Symptoms
- The washer will not start — it attempts to lock the door but fails
- You may hear repeated clicking at the door lock
- The door may physically lock but the control board doesn’t recognize it
- ER:01 appears on the display
Common causes
- Loose wire harness — the connector between the door lock and the main board vibrates loose over time
- Damaged wiring — the wires running from the door lock through the hinge area can chafe and break from repeated door cycles
- Failed door lock assembly — the bi-metal actuator or solenoid inside the lock has worn out
- Misaligned door strike — the door catch doesn’t align with the lock mechanism, preventing full engagement
Troubleshooting steps you can try
- Power reset — unplug the washer for 5 minutes. A one-time communication glitch between the lock and board can sometimes clear.
- Inspect the door catch — open the door and look at the metal striker on the door frame. If it’s bent or corroded, realign or clean it.
- Check for obstructions — ensure nothing (clothing, debris) is caught between the door and the rubber boot seal, preventing full closure. See Bosch washer support for model-specific door maintenance.
When to call a technician
If ER01 persists after a reset and the door catch is aligned, the lock assembly or wiring needs replacement. A technician will test the lock solenoid resistance and check wire continuity.
