A Bosch refrigerator leaking water is most often caused by a clogged defrost drain, a loose or overdue water filter, a leaking ice maker supply line or fitting, or a door that is not sealing and letting humid air condense inside. Where the water appears tells you which: pooling in the bottom of the fresh food section points to the defrost drain, a puddle on the floor in front or under the unit points to the supply line, filter or drip pan, and wet ice trays or frost around the freezer door point to the ice maker or the seal.

Where is the water coming from?

Before you touch anything, dry the floor and the inside of the cabinet, then watch for an hour or two. A refrigerator that leaks only after a defrost cycle behaves very differently from one that drips steadily from the water line. Take photos of where the water first appears. For a fresh food compartment, look at the back wall and under the crisper drawers; for the exterior, look at the front edge, the sides and under the toe grille. If you see water running along the water line, switch off the supply valve and unplug the unit now, before you do any further diagnosis.

A leak that also produces warm food or a running compressor that never stops needs a technician sooner rather than later. Our guide to a Bosch refrigerator not cooling covers what to check if the temperature is rising.

Is a clogged defrost drain the cause of water inside a Bosch refrigerator?

Very often. A refrigerator that cools without frost melts the ice from its evaporator from time to time, and the meltwater runs down a small drain and out to a pan underneath, where it evaporates. If that drain clogs with food debris or ice, the water backs up and flows over the edge into the compartment, pooling under the crisper drawers or freezing on the floor of the freezer. Unplug the refrigerator, find the drain hole at the back of the compartment floor, and flush it gently with a cup of warm, not boiling, water using a turkey baster or a small funnel. A soft pipe cleaner helps with a stubborn clog.

If the drain clears and water keeps coming, or frost has built up on the evaporator panel, read our guide to Bosch refrigerator frost buildup, because ice that never melts properly is the root of many drain problems.

Could the water filter or water line be leaking?

Yes, and this is the most likely cause when the water is on the floor. A filter that was not seated and turned fully, an old filter with a cracked housing or a fitting on the supply line that has loosened over time will drip steadily. Look at the filter first: remove it and put it back according to the instructions, making sure it clicks or locks. Then look at the connection at the back of the refrigerator and the shutoff valve on the wall; a wet fitting or a damp patch on the wall is the sign. Tighten a loose fitting only a little by hand. Never use a long wrench on plastic fittings.

If a hose is cracked, kinked or has been crushed behind the unit, switch the water off and call for help rather than patching it. Our guide to replacing the Bosch refrigerator water filter shows how to seat a new filter correctly, which solves a surprising number of leaks.

Can the ice maker cause a leak?

Yes. A frozen or misaligned fill tube can send water past the ice mold and onto the freezer floor, where it freezes into a sheet. An inlet valve that does not close fully can also let water seep into the mold continuously, producing a block of ice and a drip. If the ice maker is making hollow, stuck-together or overflowing ice, turn it off, remove the ice, defrost the area with the door open and then restart it. Our Bosch ice maker troubleshooting guide goes through the checks in order.

Is the door seal letting in humid air?

A door gasket that is torn, dirty or slightly open lets warm, humid room air flow in, and that moisture condenses on cold surfaces and runs down the back wall or drips to the floor. Test the seal with a dollar-bill-sized slip of paper closed in the door at several points around the frame; it should hold firmly everywhere. Clean the gasket with warm water and a mild soap, because a film of dried spills keeps it from sealing. Also check that the refrigerator is level, with the front slightly higher than the back so the doors swing shut on their own, and that nothing sticking out of the shelves holds a door ajar.

Our Bosch refrigerator installation guide explains how to level the unit and set the clearance around it.

When should you stop and call a technician?

Call if the leak returns after you clear the drain and reseat the filter, if there is any sign of water near the electrical parts or if the water is warm, since that points to a failed compressor system. Call too if the water is coming from a sealed area you cannot reach, or if the refrigerator has been wet inside for several days and smells. Do not run the unit with a water supply leak. Our Bosch refrigerator repair page explains how a visit works.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Bosch refrigerator leaking water on the floor?
The usual causes are a loose or old water filter, a leaking supply line fitting, an overflowing drip pan or a door that is not sealing. Where the water appears will point to the cause.
How do I unclog the defrost drain?
Unplug the refrigerator, find the drain hole at the back of the compartment floor and flush it with a cup of warm water using a turkey baster. Clear any debris with a soft pipe cleaner and do not use a sharp tool.
Is a leaking refrigerator dangerous?
The water itself is a slip hazard and can damage flooring. If water has reached an outlet or the cord, unplug the unit only if you can do so dry, otherwise switch off the breaker first.
Should I keep using the refrigerator while it leaks?
If the leak is from the water line, turn the water off and keep the refrigerator cold if it is otherwise working. Do not use the ice maker or dispenser until it is fixed.
