A failed Bosch dishwasher drain pump is usually worth repairing, because the pump is a replaceable part and the rest of the dishwasher is often sound. Before you decide, rule out the cheap causes: a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose, a blocked garbage disposal connection or a stuck pump cover. If the water still stays in the tub after those checks, the pump itself is the likely cause, and the repair-or-replace decision depends mostly on the age and overall condition of the dishwasher, not on the pump alone.
How do you know the drain pump is the problem and not something simpler?
Standing water in a Bosch dishwasher is far more often a clog than a dead pump. Our guide to a Bosch dishwasher not draining calls the cause usually a blocked filter, a kinked drain hose or a clogged garbage disposal connection, not a major component failure. Start with the filter. Our filter cleaning guide explains how to remove and rinse the three filter parts and check that the small flap over the drain pump opening moves freely.
Then look at the drain hose behind the dishwasher for kinks, confirm it loops high under the countertop or goes through an air gap, and run the garbage disposal if the dishwasher drains through one. If a new disposal was installed recently, make sure the knockout plug was removed from the dishwasher inlet. Only when those steps fail does the pump deserve suspicion.
What do the Bosch drain error codes tell you?
Bosch dishwashers can show codes that point to where the drain path is blocked, and our error code pages explain the ones the site lists. The E22 page describes a clogged drain filter, the E24 page a blocked or kinked drain hose and the E25 page a blocked drain pump cover or check valve. Read what the display shows and work from the simplest cause to the next one.
Notice that none of these codes says the pump motor has failed. A blocked cover or valve is a clog, and you may clear it. The reset steps differ between models, so check the owner’s manual for yours. If the code returns after you clear the obvious blockage, a part is probably failing and it is time to think about a repair.

What does a failing Bosch drain pump sound like?
Start a drain or a short cycle and listen near the bottom of the dishwasher. According to our not draining guide, a working drain pump makes a low humming sound during the drain phase, while complete silence or a loud grinding noise points to a pump issue. Silence can also mean a control or wiring fault, and grinding can come from a hard object such as broken glass caught in the pump, so the noise narrows the cause but does not prove it.
Do not reach into the sump with bare hands, because broken glass can hide under the filter. Do not take the kick plate off or touch the pump wiring yourself. Switch off the dishwasher at the breaker from a dry spot first, and if water has reached the floor around the machine, keep clear of the outlet and the cord. A technician can test the pump and the circuit that feeds it.
Should you repair or replace a Bosch dishwasher with a bad drain pump?
For most owners the answer is repair. Our not draining guide describes pump replacement as a straightforward repair for a technician. Whether it makes financial sense depends on the quote and on the rest of the machine, and a well-kept Bosch with a sound tub and other parts often justifies it. Our repair or replace guide for Bosch dishwashers sets out an age and cost framework you can apply to your own case.
Replacement becomes reasonable when the dishwasher is old and shows several faults at once, such as a noisy pump, a weak wash and a failing control, or when the quote for the pump plus another major part approaches the cost of a new unit. In that case, compare features: for example, our Bosch dishwasher series comparison shows what each series offers. A technician visit makes sense when you want an honest diagnosis before deciding.
What can you do to protect a new pump?
Most pump failures start with debris. Scrape plates into the trash before loading, clean the filter regularly, and keep hard debris such as broken glass and bone fragments out of the sump. Make sure the drain hose keeps its high loop so dirty water does not flow back from the sink. If you use a garbage disposal, run it clear before starting the dishwasher. A clean filter also protects the pump from working harder, which our filter guide notes can shorten its lifespan.
After any pump repair, run a cycle and watch for leaks at the base and listen for the humming drain. If water still stays in the tub, the cause may be elsewhere in the drain path.
