Spin cycle terminated — unbalanced load or motor communication error

What Bosch ER20 error means on your washer

The Bosch ER20 error indicates that the spin cycle has been terminated prematurely. The two most common causes are a severely unbalanced load that triggers the vibration sensor, or a communication failure between the motor control module and the main control board. The washer stops spinning as a safety measure to prevent damage to the drum bearings and suspension system.

Symptoms

  • The washer stops during the spin cycle and displays ER:20
  • Clothes are soaking wet at the end of the cycle (no spin extraction)
  • The washer may attempt to spin, stop, redistribute, and try again multiple times before giving up
  • Excessive vibration or movement during attempted spin

Common causes

  • Unbalanced load — a single heavy item (blanket, comforter, bath mat) bunches to one side of the drum
  • Overloaded drum — too much laundry prevents even distribution during the spin ramp-up
  • Motor control module fault — the electronic module that drives the motor has a communication error with the main board
  • Worn suspension springs or shock absorbers — the drum suspension can’t dampen vibration, causing the vibration sensor to trigger prematurely

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Redistribute the load — open the door, rearrange the laundry evenly around the drum, and restart the spin cycle. For large items, add a few smaller items to balance the weight.
  2. Reduce the load — remove about a third of the laundry and try again.
  3. Check the washer level — an unlevel washer amplifies vibration. Place a level on top and adjust the front feet until the bubble is centered. Refer to Bosch washer installation guide for leveling instructions.
  4. Listen for unusual sounds — if the drum makes clunking or banging sounds even with a small load, the suspension springs or shock absorbers may be worn.

When to call a technician

If ER20 occurs with properly balanced, small loads, the suspension system or motor control module may need attention. A technician will check the shock absorbers, springs, and test communication between control modules. Schedule Bosch washer service. Our washer repair team handles suspension and motor diagnostics.
