Maximum drying time exceeded — cycle ran longer than 4 hours

What Bosch E03 error means on your dryer

The Bosch E03 error indicates that the maximum drying time of 4 hours has been exceeded. The dryer’s moisture sensors detected that the laundry is still damp after running for the full time limit, so it stops the cycle and displays E03. This is a safety measure to prevent overheating and excessive energy use. E13 indicates the same condition on some models.

Symptoms

  • The dryer runs for approximately 4 hours then stops
  • Clothes are still damp when the cycle ends
  • E03 or E13 appears on the display

Common causes

  • Overloaded drum — too much laundry prevents proper tumbling and air circulation
  • Clogged exhaust vent — restricted airflow means moisture can’t escape, keeping clothes damp indefinitely
  • Failed heating element — the dryer tumbles but without heat, clothes never dry. The element may have an open circuit
  • Faulty moisture sensors — the sensor bars inside the drum read falsely wet, preventing the cycle from ending normally

Troubleshooting steps you can try

  1. Reduce the load — remove about a third of the laundry and restart. Front-load dryers need space for tumbling and airflow.
  2. Clean the lint filter and exhaust vent — a restricted vent is the most common cause. Disconnect the vent hose and check for lint buildup through the entire run to the exterior. Visit Bosch dryer support for vent cleaning instructions.
  3. Test the heat — run the dryer for 5 minutes on high heat with a small load, then open and feel if the air inside is hot. No heat indicates a heating element or thermal fuse failure.
  4. Clean the moisture sensors — locate the two metal sensor bars inside the drum (usually near the lint filter opening). Wipe them with a cloth dampened with white vinegar to remove fabric softener buildup.

When to call a technician

If reducing the load and cleaning the vent doesn’t fix E03, the heating element or moisture sensor likely needs testing. A technician will measure the heating element resistance and check the thermal fuse. Schedule Bosch dryer service for diagnosis.
